Let me start by addressing the picture of this article, it was found in Facebook in my feed and I can’t recall from where it came. Credits to whomever made it!
So how you Dune sleepers?
I have fallen in love not only with Dune: Awakening but the Dune universe itself.
I know, I am late to the party and I have started it in reverse order: Dune: Awakening > TV Series > Movies > Books but better late than never!
I have to state also that it helps to understand the game if you have read the books OR have seen the 2 Movies.
No, the story isn’t in the books, well to the point that I have reached by reading it at least, but it is using a lot of terms, concepts and technologies that don’t make much sense if you have prior knowledge from either the books or the movies.
So what is Dune: Awakening?
According to steam’s page: Dune: Awakening is an Open World Survival RPG where you can fully immerse yourself in the epic world of Dune. Alone or with friends, explore a vast open world Arrakis, survive the sandworms, build a home, craft an ornithopter, and unravel the mystery of the missing Fremen.
This pretty much sums it up! If you have played Conan: Exiles from the same devs, Funcom, you will see and feel lots of similarities, this was also the main reason I didn’t preorder the game, even though I had it wishlisted from the very first second it was available to be wishlisted, I played the open beta, I didn’t go far, but the overall feeling I have gotten was: A reskin of Conan.
Oh boy was I wrong?
Contrary to popular belief, I am not afraid to recognize my mistakes and accept that I was wrong and correct myself.
Also that is what I want, when I am wrong, to learn and correct myself. Nothing is written in stone and there is no “divine” intervention that is always correct. So here, I was wrong and I have corrected myself with about 1000 hours of gametime in this game!
The game is addictive and does many things correct, it does also many things wrong.
The annoying thing with the game is that every time funcom adds features to the game, they end up destroying something and they have to be patching the game every day for a week or so. This is annoying!
Also their support team is laughable terrible, some time ago, the game had some bugs that didn’t allow me to enter/exit vehicles and I was in the deep desert looting a fallen cargo ship, well the loot option didn’t work to begin with and then I tried to enter my ornithopter and leave…yeah no…it didn’t happen! There was no onscreen option to either loot or enter the ship, so I died. And when a player dies to the Shai Hulud, they lose everything apart from quest items and the Vehicle Backup Tool which I managed to use to backup my ornithopter before I was eaten…so I have lost ALL my gear which was endgame level gear. Was it my fault? Absolutely not! So I have opened a support ticket, described to them what happen and I was expecting them to restore my items…they replied a few hours later with a response: We know about the bug, live with it!… I mean c’mon! At least take accountability!
If I have to exclude those negatives, the game is fun! It has a beautiful, engaging story, it has interesting characters as friends and as enemies.
It has great character customization and the ability to change the character’s appearance later in the game via the plastic surgery which also gives old characters to try the new additions of the customization.
In general Funcom seems to be listening to the people and adding or fixing things
